Birthplace of Queen Victoria and home to Princess Diana. Originally a private country house, public visitors are now warmly welcomed into Kensington Palace – the birthplace of Queen Victoria and home to Princess Diana between 1981 and 1997. Relive the moment in the Victorian Rooms when the young Princess Victoria discovered that she was to become Queen. Admire the family portraits and original furnishings adorning the homely Queen’s Apartments. Revel in the grandeur of the King’s Apartments, saturated with paintings and works of art from the Royal Collection, and find sanctuary in the calming Cupola Room where Princess Victoria was christened. On permanent display inside the palace is the famed Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection bursting at the seams with outfits from the 18th century to the present day including a range of glamorous dresses worn by HM Queen Elizabeth II and an array of spectacular and unique evening gowns modelled by Diana, Princess of Wales. No tour of the palace is complete without taking a turn around the elegant 18th Orangery and Sunken Garden designed to host elaborate court entertainments during the reign of Queen Anne. Best for: Princess Diana and Queen Victoria, dresses, family portraits, Orangery and sunken gardens. Did you know? In 1725-6 King George I introduced a number of exotic animals into the gardens of Kensington Palace - including three tigers and two extremely rare civet cats.
Point of interest/Attraction: Royal Albert Hall - Baglioni Hotel London - 123besthotel Point of interest/Attraction: Royal Albert Hall
19th century concert hall and home to the Proms. An ongoing programme of renovation and redevelopment has transformed this iconic music venue from one beset with niggling problems into an internationally renowned concert hall offering a wide variety of entertainment. Classical music, rock, pop and jazz, sporting events, galas, banquets and balls and the world-famous Proms series all take place within its iconic oval walls. One of London's most versatile venues, it is a favourite of performers from Jose Carreras to Kylie Minogue. The Hall also plays host to the Seniors’ tennis circuit. The likes of Becker and McEnroe can be seen bouncing balls off the famous mushrooms on the ceiling. The brainchild of Prince Albert, inspired by the success of the Great Exhibition, the hall first opened in 1871, ten years after the Prince’s death. Heavily influenced by ancient amphitheatres and notions of the “Empire” and the arts, the oval structure’s terracotta walls are decorated on the outside with a frieze dedicated to "The Triumph of Arts and Sciences" – make sure you take a look when you visit. Gas lighting, poor acoustics and old pipe organs have been replaced over the years and the awe-inspiring venue now exists as a testimony to both the architectural and aesthetic achievements of the past and the technological developments of the present – it now features the largest pipe organ in the British Isles. A Grade I listed building, the hall has a capacity of 8000 and is most consistently packed out during the summer when the Promenade concerts take over. First held here in 1941 when their original venue – the Queen’s Hall – was bombed, the Proms are fantastically popular. Queue up on the day and pick up some cheap tickets for the seat-less “Gods” (the highest level in the hall) or book in advance and take over a whole box. This season of classical music traditionally climaxes in an ebullient, flag-waving crowd belting out the National Anthem. This populist ethos is reflected in the Hall’s mix of traditional, contemporary and experimental concerts. Whatever the event, this is one of the most iconic and atmospheric music venues around. Only a short walk from Kensington Gardens, the Albert Memorial, the V & A Museum, it’s a great way to end a spot of sightseeing in "Albertopolis". Best for: Prince Albert, pipe organs, pop and the Proms. Did you know? Queen Victoria was too overcome to speak at the official opening ceremony in 1871. Instead, Edward, Prince of Wales, pronounced: "The Queen declares this Hall is now open".
Point of interest/Attraction: Victoria and Albert Museums - Baglioni Hotel London - 123besthotel Point of interest/Attraction: Victoria and Albert Museums
Museum of decorative and applied arts. With over 145 galleries to explore and over 4 million items, the V&A is one of the most influential museums of decorative and applied arts in the world. It was originally founded in 1852, with the aim of enthusing and educating British manufacturers and designers. It is now home to a stunning collection of European, Indian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Islamic artefacts ranging from ceramics, glass, metalwork and sculpture to costume, armour, weaponry and furniture. The gallery also houses the national collection of photography. Visitors can delve into the fascinating dress collection that features samples from historical dress to 21st century haute-couture or examine the celebrated Arts and Crafts interiors of the Morris and Gamble Rooms. The gallery is often cited as housing the greatest collection of Italian Renaissance sculpture outside Italy, while the British Galleries - which opened to great acclaim in November 2001 - are unique in their exploration of British design from Chippendale to Morris, Adam to Mackintosh. Highlights include the Great Bed of Ward as mentioned in Shakespeare's 'Twelfth Night', and James II's wedding suit. In recent years the trend at the V&A has been towards style retrospectives of entire periods like Art Deco, Art Nouveau and shows focusing on individual designers like Armani and Ossie Clarke. The museum is second-to-none in this regard. The building itself – a mix of Victorian and Edwardian design – also presents a truly formidable display. The two halls (Cast Courts), in particular, form a major focal point for the gallery – with their high glass roof, elevated corridors and walkways. Best for: James II's wedding suit, ceramics and sculpture, Morris to Macintosh. Did you know? In July 1973 - to support its outreach programme aimed at attracting young people - the V&A became the first museum to hold a rock concert.
Point of interest/Attraction: London Eye (Millenium Wheel) - Baglioni Hotel London - 123besthotel Point of interest/Attraction: London Eye (Millenium Wheel)
The world's largest observation wheel located on the banks of the Thames river. Voted the world’s most popular tourist attraction in Spring 2005, the British Airways London Eye elbowed its way onto the capital’s tourist scene only a few years ago but has already become a definitive part of the London experience. This spectacularly streamlined riverside wheel boasts an impressive 150 metre arc and allows inhabitants of its sleek, modern, totally see-through glass-pods an unrivalled 360˚ view of London and beyond – the Houses of Parliament, Canary Wharf, Big Ben, the glorious old winding Father Thames and Windsor Castle are just a few of the 55 attractions that can be admired from the top of the arc. On a clear day the view extends to 25 miles in each direction. It moves at a slow but steady pace, taking 30 minutes to complete its flight. Because of its popularity, there are usually lengthy queues to book tickets and then to board the flight. Online booking saves time. A variety of different ticketing options and packages are available depending on your individual requirements. You can choose to upgrade to a Fast Track ticket, which entitles you to check in just 15 minutes before your flight, or spend the flight in the company of a London guide or a glass of champagne. The flight only lasts 30 minutes and it’s bound to be busy but this is still top of the London “must-do” list. Best for: Sleek, see-through pods, sight-spotting views and riverside vistas. Also known as: London Eye | Millenium Wheel Did you know: On average the Eye travels at a speed of 0.26 metres per second and makes 8000 rotations a year.
